In 1990,
my stepfather was in a nursing home following a stroke four
years previously. The nursing home called me early one afternoon
to tell me that he was suffering from heart failure and would
not live more than a few hours. I left work and drove to the
home. I found my stepfather sitting up in bed, laughing and
kidding the nurses who were in his room. I was dumbfounded.
I asked the nurses, Wasn't he supposed to be dying? They reassured
me that he was dying and that it was indeed just hours away.
I still
could not believe it. I started talking over old times with
him. He was so lucid, remembering everything about our past.
However, every now and again he would ask me who the woman
was who was sitting on the next bed. He wondered why she was
there, smiling and listening to our conversation. I saw no
one there, but he insisted that I get a nurse to make her
leave so we could talk in private. This went on for two hours
or so until I left to go home.
When I
arrived home, my wife informed me that he passed away ten
minutes after I left the home. This is the only event of this
kind that I have ever had in my sixty-five years on this planet.
I would like to believe that what he saw was his angel coming
to take him back home.
