On
June 10, 1997, my daughter, Laurie, and her daughter,
Rachael, were coming from Harrisburg to visit my son
and his wife near Pittsburgh. I had agreed to meet her
at David's home at about 4:00 p.m. where we would visit
a while, after which she would follow me to my home.
She
had never been to David's new home, and was following
directions he had given her over the phone. She and
I had not coordinated our arrival times, since her trip
was three hours long and mine about an hour. I arrived
near 4:00 and turned off the main highway onto the road
leading to David's house.
Halfway
along that road, I saw a van off to the right which
looked like Laurie's waiting to pull out onto the road.
When I looked closer, I saw that it was Laurie. She
pulled in behind me and simply followed me to David's
house.
Later
she told me that she had been told to turn right at
the fifth light. She had miscounted and had pulled into
a bank parking lot by mistake. After she turned around,
she was waiting to get back out onto the road just as
I drove past. Her mistake lengthened the time precisely
so that she could fall in behind me.
