In 1987
I saw a face in the sky. It happened one stormy spring day
after my husband was late getting back from a trip the night
before. He had gone to a university about 3 hours away to
do research with several of his students, and I thought he
would be home earlier in the evening. But he didn't arrive
home until 3:00 a.m. as they had computer problems and couldn't
leave until around midnight.
This was
before we had a cell phone, and because he couldn't call me,
I felt sure something terrible had happened that night. So
between midnight and 3:00 a.m., I knelt by my bed and prayed
for his safety like I had never prayed before. It was like
I turned my soul inside out and, as a result, I was beyond
words when my husband did arrive home.
Then all
throughout the next day I felt strange, like I had been washed
out on the inside or something like that. The weather that
day was very inclement, with wind and rain. Around 5:00 or
6:00 p.m., I suddenly got up from the sofa and told my husband
I was going to check the conditions outside. At the kitchen
door, we could see only a small part of the sky as there were
tall trees blocking most of our view.
But in
that very place in the sky, there was a definite face (and
nothing else) made from a cloud and covering most of that
area. It had a nose and beard and all the other distinctive
facial and head features. The face was turned slightly to
one side, and there were eyes somehow made from a break in
the clouds that, for lack of a better word, pulsed down at
me. I was shocked that the face was so clear and unmistakable,
and that I had arrived at the door just in time to see it.
So I called
my husband and my daughter to come see it, and they both confirmed
that it was indeed a face. After they, both obviously touched,
left to go back to the living room, I stood there at the door
watching to see what would happen. Suddenly it was as though
someone took an eraser and started wiping the face away from
the bottom up, leaving the sky clear again in that area.
I know
beyond a doubt that that face was meant for me, as a confirmation
from God that he knows me and knows where I am located, because
for hours afterwards I felt an electrical energy tingling
all over my body. I have, however, wondered many times over
these intervening years whether anyone else saw the face,
and what they thought of it, or whether I and my family, alone,
were the only viewers.
I like
to think that this was the face of God, and even now, twenty
years later, I still feel awe realizing that I am loved enough
for God to manifest himself to me in the way that he did.
He not only answered my prayer and brought my husband home
safely, but he also gave me a visual sign that there is definitely
something wonderful beyond our five senses that we can touch
through prayer and meditation.
