Beth's
mother was in a nursing home in New Castle while Beth was
living in Harmony, forty minutes away. Her mother was very
sick and Beth had been to see her the night before. The nursing
home called in the morning saying that she should come immediately
since her mother's condition had worsened.
Beth arrived
shortly, went to the room and started talking to her mother,
since the sense of her presence was very strong. But a nurse
interrupted her to tell her that her mother had died moments
before. Beth got very upset and they went out to the nurses'
station together. She was not only in grief over her mother's
sudden death, but was angry at herself for not being there
when she died. She called a friend to come be with her.
While
they were waiting for the friend's arrival, she and several
nurses were standing in a circle by the nurses' station fifteen
feet from her mother's room. Beth was trying to make some
decisions about the arrangements. While she stood there, she
sensed a presence approaching her from the rear. Then a hand
grasped her shoulder. She could feel the pressure of the thumb
on the back of her shoulder and then the fingers press into
the front of her shoulder as someone took hold of her in a
comforting gesture.
She turned
around, thinking it was the owner of the nursing home who
was a good friend. But there was no one there. At that moment
she knew it was her mother. It was as though she were saying,
"I'm here, I'm OK, don't be upset, calm down and do what you
have to do. But relax. Everything is fine." As a result of
this experience, a tremendous sense of calm came over Beth.
It was a typical motherly action, taking hold of her and telling
her to calm down.
The friend
arrived and they went into the room together, standing by
her mother's body and saying their farewells. Beth still had
a strong sense of her mother's presence in the room. The friend,
who has psychic abilities, told her that she saw a tall young
man in buckskins come into the room and lead her mother away.
Beth could not see this, but shortly after this the sense
of her mother's presence was gone.
